I got this email from American Express last night regarding my Hilton Honors Surpass*card and I am psyched about it. If you add a family member (or even a friend) to your account, and then they put $250 on that card, you get 5,000 bonus points. You can get the bonus up to four times for four different authorized users.
I immediately went online and added my husband and daughter as authorized users. The site says an authorized user must be 13 or older, so my daughter qualifies. I also noticed that they don’t require you to say the date of birth or social security number of the authorized user you’re adding.
I’m not saying you should ever lie to your credit card company, of course, but if you don’t happen to know someone’s social or birthday, that doesn’t mean you can add them to your account. I may actually hold onto this card in my daughter’s name, because there have been times when I wanted her to go to the store for me and I didn’t have cash, and she felt uncomfortable trying to use my credit card. With this card that has her name in it, she probably wouldn’t balk.
Since I could still add two more authorized users, I am thinking of adding other names, like my parents’.
What can you get for 5,000 Hilton points? Well, rooms tend to run 25,000-35,000 points (or much more), so if you add four names to your account and spend the $250 on all of them, you could get close to getting a free hotel night. Or, you could trade your points for airline miles, which might come in handy if you are close to an award flight with your airline. For instance, if you earn 10,000 Hilton points using this promo, you could trade them for 1,500 American Advantage miles or 1,000 United MileagePlus miles.
