Now that we have lived in Alameda for more than three years, we’ve gotten the feel of the rhythms of the year. After Back-to-School night, we get ready for our school carnival and walkathon. Then Halloween trick-or-treating, and then …
The Little Ice Rink opens up at South Shore Center!
This ice rink epitomizes everything about how great it is to live in Alameda. I mean, come on! We can walk to it (.7 miles) along the longest continuous beach on San Francisco Bay, taking in one of those epic Alameda sunsets and enjoying temperatures in the 60s. Then we get to put on our gear and ice skate outdoors, without being cold.
We were very grateful to be invited to The Little Ice Rink kick-off party last night. It started with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and some dazzling performances. I mean, we were literally dazzled, especially when we saw this performance using fire on the ice:
Soon it was our turn to hit the ice. Nutmeg actually skipped her weekly figure-skating lesson at the Oakland Ice Arena in order to attend this event, so you know she was excited to get out there. She was also excited that they have skates in half sizes to rent here. This kid is in heaven on the ice.
The littles, of course, were mostly excited to use the “Bobby” plastic seals.
I got to take a spin on a Bobby too, with Nutmeg pushing:
We had such a blast! To top it all off, Alyssa from Jamestown, the company that runs South Shore Center, tipped us off that Nutmeg made it into the promotional video about the rink, from an interview she did at last year’s kickoff party. (She’s at 1:14)
I have seen some of my Alameda friends chattering on Facebook today about hitting the grand opening to the public tonight. Do it! Sharky from the San Jose Sharks will be there, and there will be some figure skating performances as well. I know we’ll be back before the season is over.
Disclosure: My family and I received free admittance to the kick-off party, free skate rentals, and some goodies from South Shore Center businesses. All opinions expressed are my own.
