One reason we are able to live without a car is that practically anything we would ever want to do is within a short bike ride’s distance from our home on the island of Alameda. Bowling, beach, movie theater, shopping of all kinds? A mile or less.
Ice skating? For most of the year, that’s a 45- minute trip to downtown Oakland, via bike/BART or bus. But from now through late January, we can ice skate right here on the island, at The Little Ice Rink, set up in the parking lot of South Shore Center. What’s better than walking to the ice rink? Skating in short sleeves, of course. Gotta love California.

This year we got to be among the first people on the ice, since South Shore Center and Perforce so kindly threw an opening-night party that we were able to attend. Not only did my kids skate until I nearly dropped (even though I was only watching them by that point), but we also enjoyed performances by some very talented young people from Sharks Ice in Oakland. It was a great night.
But enough bragging. Now it’s time for YOU to get to go skating at The Little Rink for free. Well, not all of you. South Shore Center has very kindly provided me with two skating passes, including rentals, to be used during any open hours between now and Jan. 19.
To win, please “like” the Car-Free Mom Facebook page, then comment here to let me know you did so, with your Facebook name so I can verify. I’ll use Random.org to pick one lucky winner for the pair of tickets. Because these are for local use only, winners must have a California address, or a good explanation of how they are going to get here and use the tickets. One entry per person, deadline is Friday, Nov. 14.
Disclosure: I received free entry to the ice skating party and this pair of tickets to give away for free. All opinions stated here are my own.
